How long will my appointment take?
New Patients referred to our practice often have complex eye problems requiring testing, dilation, and evaluation. As a result, examinations at Virginia Retina Consultants may extend as long as 2 hours. Please be prepared for a complete evaluation.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Yes. For a complete examination, the eyes must be dilated.
How long will the dilation drops last?
It can take several hours for the dilation drops to reverse. Sunglasses for you trip home may be helpful.
Why do I need dilation if my referring doctor just did that?
Patients referred to our office generally have retinal pathology that requires a comprehensive retinal evaluation including dilation.
Do I need a driver for the appointment?
A driver is recommended but not required if you are comfortable driving with your eyes dilated.
If I need a procedure, will it be done the same day?
Certain procedures can be done the same day, others need to be scheduled at a later date. Same day procedures are offered when possible to prevent vision loss or for patient convenience.
What kind of testing or imaging will be used to examine my eyes?
Testing and imaging is done as needed depending on the specific pathology of each patient. Typically imaging includes Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and color photos of the retina. Some patients need additional tests including Fluorescein Angiography, Ophthalmic Ultrasound, and Visual Field testing.
Do I need to have my vision checked again if it was just measured by my referring eye doctor?
Vision will need to be checked at each visit as it may vary and is required to accurately track vision changes.
Can I get a glasses prescription at my exam?
No, our practice is limited to the Medical and Surgical management of retinal diseases. We do not perform refractions or prescribe glasses or contact lenses. Your referring general ophthalmologist or optometrist is an excellent resource for an evaluation for glasses.
If I have a family history of macular degeneration do I need a retinal exam?
All Eye Care providers perform an evaluation of the retina and can refer patients with retinal disorders to our office for further diagnosis and management.
Do I need a referral to be seen by a retina specialist?
The majority of our patients are referred by other Eye Care providers. Patients with known disorders or risk for retinal disorders can be seen without a referral. Please contact our office to determine if it would be appropriate for you to see one of our doctors.
Should I bring my medications with me to the visit?
Please bring all eye drops to each visit so we may confirm and verify their use accurately. A list of systemic medication and any changes in your medications is very helpful.
Should I wear my contact lenses to my appointment?
Yes, we ask that you wear your contact lenses or glasses to each visit since we want to check your best vision using corrective lenses. Contact lenses are removed after checking your vision so glasses are important to bring as well.
