Home Hayley R James MD
Dr. James was born and raised in Virginia, growing up in Mt. Sidney, VA. She graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, receiving the prestigious George Washington Honors Scholarship, a full academic scholarship. She played for the women’s basketball team and majored in Biology. Before attending medical school, she did several years of research at the University of Virginia, co-authoring some of the early publications on the alpha gal allergy and presenting at national meetings.
Dr. James continued her education at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She was actively involved with the Lions Club and the EVMS student-run free clinic, starting a free ophthalmology clinic for uninsured patients in the Hampton Roads area. After finishing her medical degree, she stayed at EVMS to complete a one-year internship in Internal Medicine, receiving the Outstanding Intern Award. She then moved to Missouri to complete her ophthalmology residency at Washington University in St. Louis, where she received the Distinguished Service Award, given annually to a second-year resident. After residency, Dr. James completed her fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Kentucky and Retina Associates of Kentucky in Lexington, KY, one of the highest volume surgical fellowships in the country. She received training in the most advanced medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases. Dr. James is excited to return home to Central Virginia and to contribute her expertise and passion for patient care to Virginia Retina Consultants.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys traveling, cooking, exploring the local food scene, and spending time with her family, friends, and pets. In particular, she loves hiking with her husband, Peter, and their Sheepadoodle, Reuben. She is an avid fan of the University of Virginia and enjoys watching college football and basketball, as well as professional football. She and her husband are excited to explore all that Charlottesville and the surrounding area have to offer.
