Medical Services
In-office consultations and treatments are regularly performed for:
Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD):
This is the most common cause of serious visual loss in the older population. Patients are seen promptly for this potentially progressive condition and undergo consultation and comprehensive testing. The full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including digital angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) is available. Treatment options include pharmacologic therapy with intraocular injection of medications. In select patients, photodynamic laser or photocoagulation laser therapy may be used.
Diabetic Retinopathy:
The incidence of diabetes is increasing in the United States. A majority of patients with diabetes may, over time, develop progressive retinopathy and require retinal management. Annual eye exams coordinated with careful management of systemic risk factors is important in preventing progressive retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy involving central leakage of fluid is referred to as Macular Edema. Treatment consists of pharmacologic therapy with intraocular medications or laser treatment. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is due to development of abnormal new blood vessels which can bleed inside the eye or cause retinal traction and detachment. PDR is usually managed with laser treatment in the office.
Intraocular surgery for more advanced complications such as retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage is performed in the operating room.
Branch and Central Vein Occlusions:
These are the most common retinal vascular disorders besides diabetic eye disease. Laser treatment has long been the conventional management but newer therapeutic options with intraocular medications and implants have dramatically improved visual recovery in most patients.
Other disease entities managed by our Vitreoretinal practice include:
INTRAOCULAR INFLAMMATORY SYNDROMES (including UVEITIS)
INTRAOCULAR TUMORS
HEREDITARY RETINAL DISORDERS

Many retinal disorders require prompt intraocular surgery to prevent severe visual loss. These are performed at Martha Jefferson Hospital, or similar facilities, with the assistance of a select operating team, all of whom are specially trained in retinal procedures.
State-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment ensure that patients receive optimal benefit from the latest advancements in retinal surgery including:
RETINAL DETACHMENT REPAIR
SURGERY FOR MACULAR HOLES
